Building codes

The City of Louisville has adopted the 2024 International Code Council (ICC) Codes, along with local amendments and additional building regulations, to establish minimum standards for safe, sustainable, and resilient construction. These codes govern the design, construction, maintenance, and energy efficiency of buildings throughout the city. The 2024 ICC Codes became effective on December 6, 2025.

2024 International Code Council (ICC) Codes (Effective 12/6/25)

Provides the City's adopted building, residential, fire, mechanical, plumbing, fuel gas, energy conservation, existing building, and property maintenance codes.

1997 Uniform Code for the Abatement of Danerous Buildings (Effective 12/6/25)

Establishes procedures for identifying, repairing, or removing buildings that pose a danger to public health and safety.

1997 Uniform Housing Code (Effective 12/6/25)

Sets minimum standards for the maintenance, occupancy, and safety of residential housing.

Colorado Model Electric Ready and Solar Ready Code (Effective 12/6/25)

 

Promotes new construction that is prepared for future electric appliances, electric vehicle charging, and solar energy systems.

Louisville Fire Hardening Code

  • Emergency ordinance passed January 21, 2026

Requires fire-resistant building materials and construction methods to improve resilience against wildfire hazards.

Louisville Municipal Code – Chapter 15: Buildings and Construction

Contains Louisville's local building regulations, permit requirements, and amendments to adopted building codes.

Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET)

Provides Home Energy Rating System (HERS) standards used to verify residential energy efficiency compliance.

Local code amendments & requirements

2023 National Electrical Code (NEC)

Establishes minimum safety standards for electrical wiring, equipment, and installations.

NEC 2023 – Section 210.8(F), Exception #2

Requires GFCI protection for all new outdoor air conditioning units within the City of Louisville.
