Wildfires
How we're preparing for wildfires
We implement strategies to reduce risks for wildfires based on our Community Wildfire Protection Plan and the Wildfire Hazard and Risk Assessment on Louisville Public Land. Strategies include:
- Collaboration with local partners such as Boulder County Office of Disaster Management, Louisville Fire Protection District, Wildfire Partners, and more
- Community education on wildfire mitigation and home hardening.
- Implementing policy such as the Fire Hardening Code to enhance building safety.
- Wildfire mitigation on public lands through our integrated weed management program, grazing, targeted mowing, and more. Learn more about wildfire mitigation projects.
How you should prepare for wildfires
Wildfire preparedness is a community effort. While the City and our partners are working on community wildfire preparedness, we highly recommend that you individually prepare yourself, your loved ones, and your property.
- Sign up for emergency alerts at BOCOAlert.org.
- Create defensible space around your home or structure. Creating defensible space entails modifying the natural and introduced vegetation around your home to reduce fire hazard. Learn more about creating defensible space in Boulder County at WildfirePartners.org.
- Harden your home. Home hardening is the process of making your existing home and accessory structures as fire resilient as possible through home retrofits and strategic maintenance. Get started on home hardening today at WildfirePartners.org.
- Create an evacuation plan – this should include at least two types of transportation you could use, multiple routes you could take, and where you would stay or meet up with loved ones.
