Volunteer at the Museum

Be a part of the story!

Volunteering at the Louisville Historical Museum is a great way to help us collect, preserve, and share Louisville's history. There are several ways to get involved; read the descriptions below to learn more. No experience is needed, and we provide the training.

All volunteer applications are managed through the City of Louisville Human Resources department. Visit the City's volunteer page to learn about current opportunities and apply.

Volunteer options

• Tours and special events. Share your love of Louisville history with the public. Give informal tours or lead hands-on activities at events. Volunteers typically work one two-hour shift a month, day or evening, weekday or weekend. No tour experience needed.
• Oral history. Help preserve local stories by interviewing current and former Louisville residents. The team meets monthly on the third Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m., and interviews are recorded in pairs. You can also help edit videos or transcribe recordings. Being a good listener is a must.
• Collections. Work hands-on with the Museum's collection. You might scan and digitize documents and photos or help keep the collections database searchable. This role is open to tech-savvy teens and adults and usually runs two hours once a week.
• General and administrative. Help us stay organized through filing, data entry, indexing, and record-keeping. Comfort with printed and digital records and basic Microsoft Excel and Word is helpful. Hours are flexible.
• History makers. Put your craft skills to work. We need sewing, quilting, knitting, and needlework to support hands-on learning, and occasional help with woodworking, painting, and electronics. We provide all materials and instructions.
