Trail etiquette & safety
Everyone Has a Role in Trail Safety
Slow Down. Communicate. Share the Trail.
Louisville's trails are for everyone. Whether you're walking, running, biking, pushing a stroller, walking your dog, riding an e-bike or using a mobility device, we all play a part in creating a safe and enjoyable trail experience.
Bike and E-Bike Safety
Slow Down
- Ride at a safe, controlled speed.
- Slow down in busy areas, around curves, near underpasses and where visibility is limited.
- If riding an e-bike, adjust the power assist level to match trail conditions.
Communicate When Passing
- Ring a bell or say "On your left."
- Call out more than once if needed.
- Yield to pedestrians and slower trail users.
- Give others plenty of space.
Ride Safely
- Wear a properly fitted helmet.
- Use front and rear lights in low-light conditions.
- Stay on designated trails and bike lanes.
- Ride in the same direction as traffic.
- Follow all trail signs and traffic signals.
- Carry only the number of people your bike is designed to transport.
Walking and Running Safety
Share the Trail
- Keep one ear free so you can hear others.
- Listen for bells or verbal passing signals.
- Stay to the right and allow faster users to pass.
- Leave room for others when walking in groups.
Cross Safely
- Use marked crosswalks when available.
- Look left-right-left before crossing.
Keep Dogs on a Leash
- Dogs must remain on a leash no longer than 10 feet, except in the City's designated dog off-leash areas.
