My first library card

The Louisville Public Library launched a new, special edition ‘My First Library Card’ for our youngest patrons in April 2021.

How it works:

  1. Visit the Children's Services desk and ask to sign up your child for a My First Library Card.
  2. Our staff will ask a few questions to create the new account in our library system. We will also ask to see a Photo ID of the parent/guardian.* To get a head start, you can pre-register your child online and let our staff know when you visit.
  3. Time to celebrate! We will offer bells for your child to ring in celebration — but no pressure! If a loud celebration isn't for them, our staff is happy to celebrate quietly. We let your child lead in whatever way feels most comfortable.
  4. Your child will receive a My First Library Card sticker to mark this awesome milestone!
  5. Strike a pose! We have a My First Library Card poster that makes a great photo backdrop. We encourage you to take pictures of your child with their new card — and we'd love to see them! Share your photos with us on our Library Facebook page or by emailing them to us.

*Don't have a Photo ID with you, or is your child visiting with a grandparent, nanny, or other caregiver? No problem! Your child will still get to celebrate and walk out with their new card. The card will be set up with a limit of 3 checkouts until a parent or guardian with a Photo ID comes in to update it to full access.
