Illness Policies

When to Keep Children Home From Care

It is important that parents and child care staff are aware of the early symptoms a child may have when not feeling well or coming down with an illness. Detecting these early symptoms can help reduce the spread of illness to others.

Some symptoms or behaviors to watch for:

  • Glassy or watery eyes
  • Decreased appetite
  • Lethargy or decreased activity
  • Sleeping more
  • Irritable or crying more than usual
  • Requiring more one-on-one care

State and local guidelines are used when establishing illness policies in addition to recommendations from the Colorado Office of Early Childhood. We follow the infectious disease guidelines for schools and childcare set by the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) for when a child should stay home and when they can return.

You may also consult Boulder County Public Health for the most current guidelines and protocols.
