American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Classes

Ages 15+

This 3 day American Red Cross blended learning class includes Lifeguarding CPR (Professional Rescuer) and First Aid.

Course Overview

  • Classes are held on weekends and BVSD no-school days.
  • Participants must complete the online coursework, attend every class, and pass all skills and written tests to earn Red Cross certification.
  • Our next trainings will be in Fall 2026.

Requirements 

  • Candidates must be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled class.
  • A pre-course swimming skills test is required before participating in lifeguard training.

Pre-course Swim Test

Candidates must successfully complete the pre-course swimming skills test:

  • Swim 150 meters using freestyle and/or breaststroke
  • Swim 50 meters
  • Complete a timed brick retrieval test in 1 minute and 40 seconds or less
  • Perform a two-minute tread with no hands

For the brick retrieval test, candidates start in the shallow end, swim 15 meters to the deep end, dive down to retrieve a 10-pound brick from the pool floor, return to the surface, and swim the brick back to the starting point. Candidates must hold the brick with both hands and kick on their back and may not touch the pool floor while returning with the brick.
