Boards & Commissions

The City has 13 Boards and Commissions, and each one has its own purpose as described in the City’s Charter.

All Boards and Commissions follow the City’s open government rules and the Code of Ethics.

Agendas and records from 2006 to now are stored in the Digital Records Repository.

What you should know about serving on a board

  • You must be a Louisville resident to serve on a board or commission.
  • City employees may not serve on boards or commissions.
  • The Mayor and City Council chose Boards and Commissions members at the end of each year.
  • Open spots are announced on Louisville Cable Channel 8 and on this website.
  • Most board terms are three or four years in length and begin in January.
  • All positions are voluntary, and most boards need a commitment of only one meeting per month. A few boards need more time either preparing for meetings, attending events, or other outside work.
  • If you are chosen to be on a board, the staff will teach you how the board works in the City and what your job will be as a member.
  • Please visit the Boards & Commissions page to learn more about for the role of each board, member duties, and meeting schedule, etc.
  • All positions are voluntary and not paid

Why serve on a Board or Commission?

Serving on a city board or commission lets you help shape local rules and plans, like how land is used or how the city stays sustainable.

Key reasons to serve:

  • It’s a good way to learn leadership skills and speak up about issues that need more attention.
  • Joining a local advisory group also lets you explore topics you care about while working closely with city staff and local leaders.
  • You study important topics and share official recommendations that help guide City Council decisions.
  • You can learn about public policy, budgeting, zoning, and how to work with others to find agreement.
  • You meet other community members who care about the same issues and connect with local elected officials.
