Local Government & Council
About our City government
Louisville dates back to August 1877, when the Welch Mine opened, the first of many coal mines to come. Louis Nawatny, a local landowner, later platted his land and named it for himself. The Town of Louisville was incorporated on June 16, 1882.
We are now a home rule municipality. Louisville has a council-manager form of government; we are governed by a City Council and City Manager. Our Home Rule Charter and the Colorado Revised Statutes lay out the rules and regulations under which the City operates.
