About us
Building Safety oversees all building and construction in Louisville. Division staff review and issue building permits, manage contractor licensing, and conduct building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing inspections. Staff also enforce compliance with building codes and other ordinances related to property maintenance.

Important news and updates:
May 12, 2026: UPDATED Contractor Licensing – Expired Licenses and Renewals
The City has updated its contractor licensing policy to clarify expiration and renewal requirements. Contractors may renew an expired license within one year of its expiration; licenses expired for more than one year require a new application and must meet current licensing requirements, including updated ICC testing where applicable.
February 3, 2026: Defensible Space Landscaping Standards for Marshall Fire-Impacted Areas
New landscaping standards now apply within the first five feet of homes in Marshall Fire rebuild areas to help reduce wildfire risk. These requirements are intended to improve defensible space around homes. For questions, contact planning@louisvilleco.gov.
January 21, 2026: Fire Hardening Updates
City Council adopted new fire hardening requirements, including updated regulations related to building materials and the use of junipers. These changes are intended to improve wildfire resilience for new construction and applicable projects.
December 6, 2025: 2024 ICC codes.
The City officially adopted the 2024 International Code Council (ICC) Codes and the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) with local amendments. All permit applications submitted on or after December 6, 2025, must comply with these adopted codes.
October 9, 2025: Updated Policy on Expired Permits
The City has updated its policy regarding expired permits. Applicants should review the revised requirements to understand permit expiration timelines and available options for renewing or reactivating expired permits.
June 23, 2025: ADUs
Louisville adopted an ordinance aligning with Colorado state legislation that allows Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in residential areas. The ordinance establishes where ADUs are permitted and the development standards that apply.
June 23, 2025: Contractor licensing changes
Contractor licensing requirements have been updated to improve the registration and licensing process. Contractors should review the new requirements before applying for or renewing a license.
June 2025: Re-register on the CSS Portal.
The City's Customer Self Service (CSS) Portal was updated on June 20, 2025. All existing users must create a new account using the same email address previously associated with their account to continue accessing permits and licenses.
